Thomas Eugene Herter Sr.

A funeral will be held Thursday, September 8th, 2005 for 81-year-old Thomas Eugene Herter Sr. of Lafayette, Louisiana, formerly of Cape Girardeau, who died Friday at Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Lafayette, Louisiana.

He was born December 21st, 1923 in Golden Eagle, Illinois, the son of the late Paul C. and Jessie Jane Sherman Herter.

He married Lucille Elaine Schmid on August 20th, 1949 in St. Louis. She survives in Lafayette, Louisiana.

Survivors also include: four sons and two daughters in law: Daniel and Timothy Herter of Ste. Genevieve; Thomas Eugene Jr. and Kathryn Ann Herter of Scott, Louisiana and Stephen and Charman Herter of Orlando, Florida; a daughter: Melodie Menard of Kingswood, Texas; a brother: Ellis Herter of Belle; a sister: Jessie Mae Vignall of St. Louis; five grandsons and four granddaughters.

He served in the U.S. Army from March 23, 1945 to December 7th, 1946.

He was a former member of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cape Girardeau.

He first worked with his father in his father's rock quarry in Golden Eagle, Illinois. He then was superintendent of West Lake Companies for 36 years. In his retirement years, he worked for his brother-in-law, Walter H. Schmid at Rehab Services of Vermillion Parish in Gueydan, Louisiana.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 7th at the Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau.

A funeral for 81-year-old Thomas Eugene Herter of Lafayette, Louisiana will be held at 10 a.m. at the Ford and Sons Funeral Home in Cape Girardeau. The Rev. Lawrence Bradt will officiate.

Burial will be in the Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis with military honors by the Missouri Honor Guard.
