Bertha Louise Gash A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 24th, 2001 for 92-year-old Bertha Louise Gash who died Saturday, March 10th in Redding, California. She was born October 8th, 1902 in Ste. Genevieve, the daughter of Phillip Eydmann and Carrie Dean Yaeger, who both preceded in death. She married Ward Gash in 1929. He preceded in death. Two children, Cindy Ramthum of Thornton, Colorado and Phillip Gash of Redding, California, survive her. One son preceded in death. One sister, Helen Crosset of Fayetteville, Arkansas, also survives her. One brother preceded in death. A niece and nephews also survive her. Six grandchildren and five great grandchildren also survive. Bertha Louise Gash completed schools in Ste. Genevieve and maintained a close relationship with her classmates throughout her life. She had an avid interest in music and gave her first piano recital at age five. When she was 18, she won first prize in a piano competition at the Jefferson County Fair. After graduating from the University of Missouri, she taught school in St. Louis for two years. She married Ward Gash in 1929. He served in the U.S. Navy and Air Force during World War II and so the family moved to different bases including Andrews AFB, West Virginia. After the war, they were stationed in Alaska where Bertha Louise again taught school. She then taught school in Calexico, California from 1953 to 1960. During that period, she completed a Masters in music from Northern Arizona State College. In conjunction with her studies, she gave her last public recital, a duet of Brahms piano works in 1957. She then returned to her life-long profession of teaching in Vacaville, Vista and Avenal, California. She retired from teaching and moved to Vacaville in 1973. She later moved to Chico, California to be closer to her family. She spent the past year in Redding, California. Her talent and interest in music and playing bridge remained with her throughout her life. Her family will greatly miss her. A memorial service for Bertha Louise Gash will be held Saturday, March 24th at 3 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Ste. Genevieve. Burial will be in the Parkview Cemetery in Farmington. The Reverend Tisha Mundy will officiate. Funeral arrangements are being handled by the Basler Funeral Home in Ste. Genevieve.
